Lip colour doesn’t stay the same forever.

The natural border can become less obvious. Colour fades. Small differences between one side and the other become more noticeable.

Then there’s makeup.

You put lipstick on in the morning. Have a coffee. Half of it is gone. Put it on again. Eat lunch. Same thing.

Lip enhancement gives the lips a base colour that doesn’t depend on what you’ve put on that morning.

It isn’t supposed to look like permanent lipstick.

That’s an important distinction.

What Enhancement Of Lips Can Change

Enhancement of lips works with colour and definition.

That means it can help make a faded lip border easier to see, introduce colour into pale areas and make the overall lip colour appear more even.
It can also make small differences in symmetry less obvious.

What it doesn’t do is physically enlarge the lips.

There is no filler involved.

Oddly enough, some clients feel their lips look fuller afterwards anyway. Once the border is clearer, the lips have more visual structure. You notice the shape rather than the faded edges.

Sometimes definition is enough.

Natural Lip Enhancement Doesn't Mean One Particular Colour

"Natural" gets thrown around a lot.
It doesn't mean everybody gets the same pale pink pigment.
A colour that looks subtle on one person could look completely wrong on somebody else.
Your existing lip tone matters.
So does your skin tone. The amount of natural pigment already present matters too.
Some people want a very soft result.
Others want to wake up with noticeably more colour.
Neither is automatically right or wrong.

Carefully placed pigment can bring that edge back without creating an obvious drawn line around the mouth.

A harsh outline is rarely the goal.

Lips aren't a blank sheet of paper.
They're delicate tissue with existing colour, texture and shape.
Pigment needs to be placed with control.
Too shallow and it may not hold as expected. Too aggressive and the finished result can become heavier than intended.
There's also the temptation to chase perfect symmetry.
That's not always a good idea.
Faces move. Lips move. People smile differently on each side.
Good cosmetic tattooing needs judgement as much as technical ability.

Enhancement Of Lips Assessment

Before choosing a colour, Kevin needs to see the lips.
Not a filtered photograph.
The actual lips.
He'll look at the existing colour, border, symmetry and the areas you feel need improvement.
This is also when expectations get sorted out.
If you want a barely-there tint, say so.
If you want something stronger, say that too.
If the result you're imagining isn't realistic for cosmetic tattooing, it's better to know before treatment rather than afterwards.

Choosing Your Lip Colour

This part shouldn't be rushed.
The colour you see in a pigment bottle isn't necessarily the colour you'll see once it's healed in the lips.
Your natural lip colour sits underneath it.
That's why copying a colour from somebody else's before-and-after photograph isn't particularly useful.
Their lips aren't yours.
Kevin considers your natural colouring and the result you're trying to achieve before selecting the pigment.
Some clients prefer a soft rose or pink tone.
Others want a little more warmth.
And some mainly want their existing colour restored rather than changed.
The aim is a colour that belongs on your face.

Immediately After Treatment

Fresh lip enhancement is not subtle.
At least not immediately.
The lips can look brighter and stronger in colour than expected straight after treatment.
Don't panic.
Fresh pigment and healed pigment are two different things.
The colour changes as the lips go through the healing process. What initially looks quite strong gradually softens.
This is why judging the treatment on day one doesn't make much sense.
You have to let it heal.

Healing Is Part Of The Treatment

The appointment isn't the end of the process.
Healing matters.
The lips may feel dry for a period after treatment and the colour can change as they settle.
Some days they may look stronger.
Then lighter.
Then different again.
That's part of the process.

One of the biggest mistakes is expecting the colour you see immediately after treatment to be the finished result.
It isn't.

Sometimes One Session Isn't The Whole Story

Pigment doesn't heal identically on everybody.
Some lips hold colour more readily than others.
Existing pigmentation can also affect how evenly the new colour appears after the first treatment.
That means a second session or further refinement may sometimes be appropriate.
It isn't necessarily a sign that anything went wrong.
Cosmetic tattooing is done on living tissue, not a wall.
There's variation.

What Makes A Good Lip Enhancement Result?

You shouldn't notice the tattooing first.
You should notice the lips.
That's the test.
The border looks clearer.
The colour looks healthier.
The lips sit naturally with the rest of the face.
Nothing is shouting for attention.
A strong technical result that looks wrong on the person still isn't a good result.

What If My Lips Are Uneven?

First, almost everyone's lips are uneven to some degree.
Look closely enough and you'll find something.
Cosmetic tattooing can sometimes make mild asymmetry less noticeable by improving the visible border and balancing areas of colour.
But trying to force perfectly symmetrical lips onto an asymmetrical face can look strange.
Kevin works with the existing shape rather than pretending natural differences don't exist.

What If My Lips Are Very Pale?

Very pale lips are one of the reasons people consider this treatment.
The approach depends on the starting colour and the result you want.
A softer pigment may be enough to put life back into the lips.
Other cases may benefit from colour being built gradually.
There isn't one formula for everybody.
And there shouldn't be.

What If I Don't Wear Much Makeup?

Then a heavy lipstick effect probably isn't what you're after.
Lip enhancement can be kept subtle.
A little more colour.
A cleaner border.
Enough that the lips don't disappear when the rest of the face is makeup-free.

Is lip enhancement the same as lip blush?

Lip blush is a commonly used term for cosmetic tattooing of the lips. The treatment uses pigment to enhance natural lip colour and definition.

Is it the same as lip filler?

No.
Lip enhancement uses pigment. Lip filler adds physical volume.
They do different jobs.

Will my lips look bigger?

The treatment doesn’t physically enlarge them.
Better colour and border definition can, however, make the natural lip shape appear fuller.

Will the colour look natural?

That’s the intention.
The result depends on your starting lip colour, pigment choice and how your lips heal.

Why does the colour look stronger immediately afterwards?

Because the pigment is fresh and the lips haven’t healed.
The initial colour isn’t the finished colour.
It softens.

Can I still wear lipstick?

Once the lips are appropriately healed, having cosmetic lip enhancement doesn’t mean giving up lipstick.
You can still change your look when you want to.

Can you fix uneven lips?

Pigment can sometimes improve the appearance of mild asymmetry or uneven borders.
It can’t completely restructure the lips.

What if I'm worried about going too dark?

Say it.
A softer approach can be taken, with colour assessed after healing before deciding whether more is wanted.

Will everybody get the same result?

No.
Natural lip colour, skin, pigment retention and healing all vary.
That’s normal.

Will I need another session?

Possibly.

How long does healing take?

There is an initial healing period during which the lips can feel dry and the colour can change considerably.
